There are a few things anyone who owns a home with a deck should know about proper outdoor lighting. Outdoor deck lights add to the functionality of your home while also reducing accidents and keeping you safe from intruders. But there are many different types of deck lighting and it can be difficult to choose the proper types of lights.

Outdoor deck lights can improve your home's accessibility and transform how you deck appears to others. Proper lighting outside will make a good impression with any visitors and help to make your house more stylish. The right deck lights will make your deck very attractive while also providing the perfect place to entertain your friends and family. Of course that's not the only reason to have lights on your outdoor deck.

Proper deck lighting is a great investment for your family's safety because they are a strong deterrent to possible break-ins or burglaries. Why rob a brightly light home when they could just go down the street to a house that is not? If you back up your home's lighting with an alarm system than you will have provided a safe haven for you and your family.

So now that you understand how important proper outdoor deck lighting can be for your home, you have to decide what kind you will buy. Well while there are many different brands of lighting, the lights themselves can be broken down into 4 types: traditional electrical outdoor lighting, led, solar, and low voltage.

Traditional Deck Lights

I'm sure we're all familiar with traditional lighting - we all have it in our homes and workplaces. It works just like the lighting in your home and requires wire to be run to them and proper weather proofing. The best thing about these types of deck lights is that they do not depend on how much sunlight they receive but they will draw electricity from your home and requires a proper installation if you don't want to electrocute yourself.

LED Deck Lights

LED outdoor deck lights are a popular choice with many home owners due to the fact that they are very easy to setup and once they are they require very little maintenance. LED deck lights use solar rays to store energy for night and can usually last all night with 3-4 hours of direct sunlight during the day. These low-wattage lights can be programed to come on automatically or manually and many kits have a motion sensor option.

Solar Deck Lights

Solar deck lighting is a great choice for those who want a no mess no fuss approach with no wires or complicated setup. These solar powered deck lights are powered by the sun using solar PV cells in a very similar fashion to LED lights. These lights can be used in many different places including stairs, railings, posts, pools, and really just about anywhere you could think of that receives sunlight during the day. The great thing about outdoor solar deck lights is that it costs nothing to operate them other than the initial cost of purchasing them.

Low Voltage Deck Lights

Hard-wired low voltage deck lighting is a great option for those whose deck is shaded during most of the day and don't want to waste electricity. These lights only take 10 watts of power and use halogen bulbs to provide your deck with constant ambient lighting. The can be installed anywhere and require proper weather proofing. Just like led and many others, low voltage deck lights can be programed to come on automatically or manually and have a motion sensor option.
